This prehistoric Minoan city is built on the fertile plain of Mesara, a few kilometers away from Matala (Heraklion). Phaistos is the second most important archaeological town after Knossos. The first palace of Phaistos was built in 2,000 BC while its habitation began in the Neolithic period.
